Electron Microscopy Days Brno at FEEC BUT

We invite you to the Electron Microscopy Days Brno (Dny elektronové mikroskopie Brno), which the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication at Brno University of Technology (FEEC BUT) is joining for the first time this year. Come and explore the microworld and discover what we are able to image, measure, and understand today.

Brno ranks among the world leaders in electron microscopy also thanks to the legacy of Armin Delong, who was closely connected with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at BUT. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the construction of the first Czechoslovak electron microscope, built in Brno under his leadership.

Programme at FEEC BUT

1️⃣ Guided tour of the electron microscope (30 minutes, registration required)

In the laboratory, our expert Nikola Papež will demonstrate how an electron microscope works in practice. You will see extreme magnifications and details invisible to the naked eye – for example, a nanofibre nearly 1,000× thinner than a human hair or a damaged silver contact on the surface of a solar cell.

2️⃣ Talk on chips and semiconductors (no registration required)

What is a semiconductor? How is a chip made? And why can’t we build an electron microscope without chips – and chips without an electron microscope?

Come and listen to an accessible explanation by Jana Drbohlavová, Coordinator and Deputy Director of the Czech Semiconductor Centre (CSC), and Martin Balabán from the student association SPICE.
This part of the programme is open without registration.

The event is organised by the Department of Physics FEEC BUT, the Department of Microelectronics FEEC BUT, the Czech Semiconductor Centre (CSC), and the student creative team SPICE.
