Engineering is in demand. Brno University of Technology continues to attract strong interest from prospective students
Interest in studying at Brno University of Technology remains high this year. So far, secondary school students have submitted 13,415 applications to bachelor’s degree programmes at BUT, confirming a long-term upward trend in recent years. The number of applications to master’s and English-taught programmes has also increased year-on-year.

Following last year’s sharp increase, when BUT recorded the highest number of applications in the past decade, interest in studying at the university remains strong. “Compared to last year, we are seeing a slight increase in the number of applications to Czech-taught study programmes. The final figure is likely to grow further, as the Faculty of Business and Management has extended the application deadline until 22 April. The overall results confirm that BUT maintains a strong position among technical universities and remains a popular choice for higher education. Since 2022, when we last recorded a slight decline, the number of applications has increased by more than 15%, which we consider a very positive development,” said BUT Vice-Rector for Education and Quality Vítězslav Máša.
Future university students who will begin their studies at BUT in September are most interested in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture and civil engineering. Applicants could choose from a total of sixty bachelor’s programmes taught in Czech. The most popular include Civil Engineering, Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Technologies.

Interest is growing across the university
The highest interest and year-on-year growth in bachelor’s applications were recorded at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (16.07%), the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (13.49%), and the Faculty of Architecture (13.46%). Applications to the Centre of Sports Activities also increased by more than 22%, which corresponds to its lower study capacity.
“We are very pleased that the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication ranks among the most sought-after faculties this year. We see this as a clear signal that our study offer reflects the current demand for modern fields. We have long been developing interdisciplinary study programmes focused on areas such as nuclear energy, space applications, chips and semiconductor technologies, cybersecurity, and biomedical applications. These topics play a key role in technological development and in addressing global challenges. The strong interest from applicants is also a commitment for us to continue improving both teaching and research facilities,” said FEEC Dean Jaroslav Koton.

In terms of total applications, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication leads with 2,550 applications, followed by the Faculty of Civil Engineering with 2,427 applications. “Civil engineering is a technical discipline that has accompanied humanity for thousands of years. The results of our work are part of everyday life – people live in buildings, use water supply and sewage systems, and travel on roads and railways. Artificial intelligence is also beginning to be applied in our field; however, due to the specific nature of construction, it will only be able to replace our work to a limited extent. We believe the repeated increase in applications reflects strong demand for our graduates on the labour market. Career opportunities in this field are very broad, and with major construction projects planned, demand for civil engineers will continue to grow,” commented FCE Dean Karel Šuhajda.
Students from abroad are also heading to BUT
This year again confirms that Brno University of Technology remains a popular choice among Slovak secondary school students. They submitted a comparable number of applications to bachelor’s programmes as last year and account for approximately one fifth of all applicants. The university has also been successful in attracting international applicants, recording a year-on-year increase of around 5%, as well as prospective master’s students. In the latter case, the majority of applications come from current BUT students, confirming their interest in continuing their studies and further developing their expertise.
The future starts at BUT
The increase in applications was supported not only by the “Here you can start” university campaign, but also by online campaigns run by individual faculties and units, which focus on presenting study opportunities and programmes to applicants. Personal contact between prospective students and current students remains an important part of the campaign, for example at open days or education fairs. The combination of long-term communication and authentic sharing of student experiences has proven to be key in applicants’ decision-making. This approach enables the university not only to reach new audiences, but also to clearly present the environment and opportunities that studying at BUT offers.
“This year’s recruitment campaign presented the university through the eyes of current students. As confirmed, authentic experiences are the best invitation for secondary school students to gain their own. Through the stories of our graduates, we showed prospective students that studying at BUT opens up a wide range of future career opportunities. We believe that our comprehensive campaign has reached not only applicants themselves, but also their parents, who often help them make decisions about their future,” said Helena Sadílková, coordinator of the BUT recruitment campaign.
