Rector of BUT Ladislav Janíček has been re-elected and will lead the university for another term
The Academic Senate of Brno University of Technology (BUT) elected on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the current Rector Ladislav Janíček as a candidate for the position of Rector of BUT for the term from February 2026 to January 2030. Janíček has been leading the university since February 2022, when he began his first term of office.

This year, Ladislav Janíček’s candidacy was supported by the academic senates of all eight faculties – the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Communication, Architecture, Chemistry, Business and Management, Fine Arts, and Information Technology – as well as by the directors of university institutes: the Centre of Sports Activities, the Institute of Forensic Engineering, CEITEC BUT, and the Computer and Information Centre.
When he first ran for the position in 2021, Janíček presented a programme based on three key principles – excellence, quality, and competitiveness. The aim was to strengthen BUT’s position in both the national and international higher education landscape, increase its visibility, and profile the university as a prestigious, internationally oriented technical and research institution.
During Janíček’s first term, the university achieved numerous successes. Its standing in international rankings improved significantly, cooperation with partners from industry and the public sector was strengthened, and strategic partnerships were developed at governmental and diplomatic levels. The university also established 21 strategic and interfaculty research and education areas connecting faculties and institutes across BUT. The area of internationalisation made significant progress through active participation in European networks and alliances such as EULiST, CESAER, and EUA.
Significant results were also achieved in the area of education. The promotion and advocacy of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) became a key theme of the university’s activities and one of the pillars of its effort to support greater interest in STEM fields as a foundation for a knowledge- and innovation-based economy. BUT also took an active role in the initiative for contract-based funding of technological qualifications, co-developing the first model and promoting its implementation in the higher education funding system. This model, which defines the direction of the university, performance indicators, and a minimum guaranteed state contribution, is currently being reviewed by the Ministry of Education. It is expected to apply, for example, in the fields of semiconductor technologies and nuclear energy, with the potential to expand to other areas such as construction. Janíček has also advocated for stronger support of the arts, which form an important part of BUT’s academic identity.
“I would like to thank all members of the academic community represented by the academic senates for their trust, and I also thank the leadership of faculties and university institutes for their cooperation and support throughout my term. The nominations themselves were already a great commitment for me, and I truly appreciate the support of the University Academic Senate in today’s election. I believe that during the first term we managed to significantly advance the university, as evidenced by its achievements at both national and international levels. It is the collective work of all of us. Over the past years, we have faced many challenges together, and I am convinced that it is only through mutual trust, open communication, and shared responsibility that we have been able to move BUT forward in key areas of its activity. I am ready to continue on this path so that we can further build the image of BUT as a prestigious and confident international technical university,” said Ladislav Janíček after the morning rector election.
In the new term, Janíček plans to build on these achievements. His main goal is the continued strengthening of excellence in education and research as a source of competitiveness and prosperity for the university, with a key emphasis on the support and development of people as carriers of quality – both staff and students – and on creating conditions for the growth of their talent, skills, and performance. He considers human potential the foundation of quality and long-term institutional stability.
“As I enter my second term, I am fully aware of the responsibility that comes with this role. I want to continue fostering a culture at BUT where excellence in education, research, and innovation is balanced with respect for the people who make up the university. Once again, I thank everyone for their trust and look forward to continued cooperation and new challenges,” added the Rector of BUT.
The re-elected Rector must still be officially appointed by the President.
