FEEC BUT signs Memorandum of Understanding with Korea Automotive Technology Institute
On 16 September, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication at Brno University of Technology (FEEC BUT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH). The agreement provides a framework for further partnership and technical exchange, particularly in the fields of battery research and materials for energy applications.

The Memorandum of Understanding for Improving Partnership & Technical Exchange was signed by Jaroslav Koton, Dean of FEEC BUT, and Chong-Wook Chin, President and CEO of the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH).
“Cooperation with KATECH gives us an opportunity to connect our research teams, share expertise and identify specific topics that we can work on together. The Memorandum provides a framework for turning our discussions into specific research activities and projects,” said Jaroslav Koton, Dean of FEEC BUT.
The cooperation has been initiated and developed by Tomáš Kazda, Head of the Battery Research Laboratory at FEEC BUT. Battery technologies and research into new materials are among the faculty's strategic areas offering opportunities for joint projects and the exchange of expertise.
“Our research focuses on the development of materials for Li-ion and Post-lithium ion batteries (Na-ion, Li-S), as well as on advanced analyses of commercial and prototype cells, including mathematical modelling and simulations of their behaviour; last but not least, we focus also on battery recycling,” explained Tomáš Kazda.
“We have been developing our cooperation with BUT and FEEC for several months, and today’s meeting has shown us further areas in which we can connect our activities. The signing of the Memorandum is an important step towards developing concrete joint activities and building a long-term partnership between our institutions,” said Chong-Wook Chin, President and CEO of KATECH.

The signing of the Memorandum was preceded by a joint meeting of representatives of both institutions. The Korean delegation also included Byeongwook Jeon, Senior Vice President / AI & Autonomous Driving Technology R&D Laboratory; Jae-Yong Park, Director / External Cooperation Department; Youn Ki Ko, Director / Energy Materials R&D Center; as well as researchers Jeongdoo Yi, Kookhan Kim and Yujun Choi. This memorandum forms part of the activities relating to the preparations for the start of an R&D project focused on the development of High-energy-density Solid-state Batteries and the establishment of an R&D centre at Brno University of Technology.
In addition to Dean Jaroslav Koton and Tomáš Kazda, BUT was represented at the meeting by Jan Bárta, Vice-Dean of FEEC BUT for Research and Knowledge Transfer; Jozef Kaiser from CEITEC BUT; and Tomáš Kratochvíl, BUT Vice-Rector for External Relations.
The visit also included a tour of the research facilities at FEEC BUT. The delegation visited laboratories focusing on battery testing and battery materials research, including the Battery Testing Laboratory, Electrode Materials Laboratory and Electron Microscopy Laboratory.
