Water battery at FEEC BUT? An experimental facility is being set up in front of T10

Construction Progress at Building T10
Construction work is currently underway in front of Building T10 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication at Brno University of Technology, attracting the attention of both students and staff. However, this is no ordinary renovation—a pilot experimental facility focused on researching so-called “water batteries” is being built on the site.
This innovative approach to energy storage uses the controlled movement of water to store excess energy, particularly from renewable sources. The project aims to contribute to the stabilization of energy grids and to verify new possibilities for energy storage on a smaller, modular scale.
The project is currently in the testing phase without water. This step allows researchers to closely monitor the behavior of the structure, control systems, and response to external conditions without the load of the water itself.
“The waterless phase is crucial for us. It allows us to test the stability of the structure, the system control, and the reactions to environmental changes. Only based on this data will we be able to proceed to the next phase of the project,” explains doc. Hladina from FEEC BUT, who heads the research team.

According to available information, the first pilot tests (sample no. 0104) have already confirmed the system’s stable operation under current conditions. The results suggest that the technology could find applications in the future not only in academic settings but also in practical use.
The project is part of broader research in the field of smart energy, which the faculty has been engaged in for a long time.
If you thought that sounded almost too good to be true… you’re right. 😄
April Fools’ Day.
But energy research is in full swing here—just a little differently.
